Our Story: Built the Sharper Way

Hi, I’m Averill Bromfield, founder and owner of Averill’s Sharper Uniforms (I’m on the left in the photo with a customer at the New York Restaurant Show). I live in Weston, Massachusetts with my wonderful wife, three children, and two dogs.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be making my living in the hospitality uniform industry. I spent 25 years in the corporate world managing voice and data networks. When the dot‑com bubble burst and I was laid off, I pivoted—starting a cutlery sales and knife sharpening business serving restaurants across the Greater Boston and New England area. That business became The Sharper Knife, Inc.
While the knife business was growing, a single customer request changed everything. An Executive Chef asked if I could source red pepper chef pants. I did the research, sourced quality kitchen apparel, and soon found myself supplying chef coats, chef pants, aprons, headwear, and full kitchen uniforms. Much of this early growth came from long days on the road—selling out of the back of my car and visiting up to six restaurants a day.
Those early years were full of lessons, challenges, and relationship-building moments that shaped how we still do business today.
Expanding Beyond the Kitchen
Another turning point came when a restaurant owner asked if I could supply server bib aprons embroidered with his logo. By sourcing U.S.-made uniforms and partnering with a local embroidery shop, we expanded into front-of-house and waitstaff uniforms. With growing demand, the company officially became Averill’s Sharper Uniforms.
From there, our product line evolved into a full-service hospitality uniform offering serving:
- Restaurants & Hospitality Groups
- Resort Hotels
- Country Clubs
- Casinos
- Security Firms & Service Organizations
For hotels and resorts, we provide uniforms for:
- Front Desk & Guest Services
- Restaurant & Banquet Staff
- Housekeeping
- Maintenance
- Valet & Transportation
Today, we proudly offer over 70 unique restaurant and server apron styles, many of which are made in the USA, along with a carefully curated selection of durable, easy-care hospitality garments.
Experience, Trust & Industry Recognition
As our business grew locally and online, we invested heavily in understanding garment performance—fabric durability, fit, care requirements, and real-world hospitality use. Our customers rely on us not just for uniforms, but for guidance.
We’ve also been fortunate to be featured on Boston’s Phantom Gourmet, where we helped produce a restaurant fashion show highlighting our customers’ uniforms. I even served as the on-air commentator—a memorable experience that reinforced the relationships we’ve built with our hospitality partners.
Our commitment to ethical business practices and customer satisfaction has also been recognized by the Better Business Bureau. You can read more about our story and BBB recognition on our blog: Sharper Uniforms Recognized by the Better Business Bureau – Behind the Business Spotlight
